BIASA ArtSpace Painter, draughtsman and sculptor, Enzo Cucchi was born in Morro d’Alba in 1949. At first a conceptual artist, Cucchi soon adopted a figurative expression and established a highly symbolic iconography, generating alternative spaces through unpredictable materials and forms, such as waves, flames, skulls and roosters. The artist, as an archetypical archeologist, searches into popular traditions to elaborate a corpus of signs that leave an ineluctable trace (Angela Vettese 2006). Cucchi started his artistic carreer in the seventies as a member of the Italian movement “Transavanguardia”, together with Francesco Clemente, Nicola De Maria, Sandro Chia and Mimmo Paladino. The movement was undisputedly recognized by the International scene, thanks to art critic and curator Achille Bonito Oliva who sealed the movement within the Conceptual and Post Modern trends that characterized the Western Post World War II Avant-gardes. BIASA ArtSpace will feature works of various dimensions, a series of horizontal maps traced by the artist through an anthropomorphic vocabulary of elements, that all seem to float within the compositions. The exhibition is both a visual and print-making experience, that illustrates the collaborative research undertaken by the art printing house 2RC Edizioni d’Arte, owned by Walter and Eleonora Rossi (Rome, Italy). The couple always engaged in creating an artistic laboratory to develop new graphic techniques that could enable the artists to conceive and realise graphic art in a revolutionary way. The creation of large etching paper presses of extraordinary power, designed by Valter Rossi himself, together with a highly specialized equipment, allowed the realization of large format etchings of absolute graphic autonomy, successively attracting numerous great masters of the Western abstract and informal 20th century avanguardes such as Lucio Fontana, Francis Bacon, Alberto Burri, Henry Moore, Enzo Cucchi, Sam Francis and many others. This exhibition aroused from the mutual desire of both BIASA ArtSpace and 2RC Edizioni d'Arte to start a collaborative project aimed at later exhibiting unpublished graphic works realised by Asian and Southeast Asian artists. During the opening BIASA ArtSpace will present its recent bilingual publication Seni Kontemporer (Art Contemporary)featuring the essay: Seni Setelah Tahun Dua Ribu Art (Beyond the Year Two Thousand) by Prof. Achille Bonito Oliva, following the presentation of the book at the residence of the Ambassador of Italy in Jakarta on June 6th. |
